Betfred Championship Round Up | Round 9

Round 9 of the Betfred Championship provided plenty of entertainment and got underway in the capital on Saturday.

York Knights’ good record against London Broncos continued with a win at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, with Mark Applegarth’s men scoring five unanswered tries in the second half to wrap up a solid victory.

This included a spell of three tries in 12 minutes to be sure of clinching the two points.

Also on Saturday, Toulouse proved too strong for league leaders Halifax as they posted 32 points on their opponents in the south of France.

Despite this, the Panthers have kept hold of top spot until the next round - but have teams below them who are hot on their heels.

Sunday’s action started with a blistering battle between Batley and Barrow at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium.

The Raiders took an early 14-0 lead on the road, with Brad Walker knocking his side ahead with a penalty before converted tries from Tee Ritson and James Greenwood.

But the Bulldogs rallied well to lead 16-14 at the break, scoring three tries in the final 10 minutes of the half.

Andrew Bulman helped the Raiders re-take the lead five minutes after half-time, but the hosts again fought back – this time through Elliot Kear.

With 10 minutes remaining, Charlie Emslie crashed over from close range and Barrow looked to be heading towards a big win, but in the final seconds of the match, drama unfolded and Batley scored out wide to make it 24-24.

The Bulldogs had a chance to steal the victory should they land the conversion, but the effort went wide and the spoils were shared.

Meanwhile, Bradford made it five wins on the spin after fighting back against Sheffield with a stunning second half performance.

Then, a Josh Drinkwater masterclass saw Oldham withstand a Doncaster comeback to secure an entertaining win over in South Yorkshire.

The Australian scored a hat-trick in a 22-point personal haul that saw Sean Long's men earn a first win in three games and a first victory at Doncaster since 2010.

Finally, Widnes banked the two points against Hunslet away from home, inspired by doubles from Matty Fozard and Mike Butt.

The Vikings had raced into an 18-0 lead, before Hunslet replied with Mackenzie Scurr and Lachlan Hanneghan.

Late second tries from Fozard and Butt, however, would ensure Widnes left West Yorkshire as victors.
